CREAMY HARISSA BEANS ON TOAST

These creamy harissa beans on toast are a simple but flavour-packed breakfast or dinner that will leave you feeling warm and cozy inside. A few staple ingredients are all you need to make these saucy beans. Spicy harissa, caramelised onions, heavy cream and of course loads of beans, all simmered together and scooped up with a slice of crusty toasted sourdough. Heaven in a bowl.

You may notice this is my second recipe recently featuring harissa, and I debated whether that was a problem but ultimately decided it isn’t! Harissa adds amazing flavour so why not right?

Beans on toast is a part of my childhood I look back on fondly. Waking up on a Sunday morning to the smell of eggs and bacon… loading up my plate with all the best breakfast foods and enjoying them with my parents. Of course, Sunday breakfast was never complete without a can of Heinz baked beans on a slice of buttered toast. Comfort food is one of my favourite things to make, and these beans are the epitome for me. The flavours are definitely elevated but at its heart, this recipe is reminiscent of simpler times. And I truly think that is my favourite thing about these beans.

These beans are actually so easy. Just let everything simmer together in one pan until the sauce turns a vibrant orangey-red and the beans have nicely softened.

So, I have been searching for weeks for a harissa paste and none of my local grocery stores stock it! I figure if it’s hard for me to find, it might be hard for you guys to find as well. But don’t worry, harissa seasoning does the trick! I have a Masterfoods one that I use on everything.

This dish is perfect for a quick breakfast or a light dinner. It’s vegetarian-friendly and can easily be made vegan by using a plant-based cream substitute. Customise it further by adding other ingredients like roasted vegetables, crumbled feta cheese, or a fried egg.
