This festive Pull-Apart Pesto Pastry Christmas Tree is light, flaky, buttery, herby and SO delicious. Serve this warm right out of the oven with a light sprinkle of flaky sea salt and marinara for dipping. It’s melt-in-your-mouth good and super adorable. This is simpler than you’d think to make, and such a fun spin on a pull-apart appetiser for your upcoming holiday dinners.
I am a big fan of cutting corners when it comes to cooking so you can spend more time with family and friends… especially over the Christmas holidays. Nobody wants to spend hours slaving away in the kitchen while everyone else is off having fun! This pull-apart pesto pastry Christmas tree is not just simple but also so dang good! It’s hard to beat pesto puff pastry, but shaped like a Christmas tree? Yes please.
First, thaw out your pastry and cut it into a giant triangle. The normal sheets of pastry you get at the shop are a tad too small, so I like to cut a second one in half and attach it to the top. Next, spread on plenty of basil pesto. We are cutting corners here by using a store-bought jar of pesto. Homemade is better of course but I wanted to make this as simple as possible. Then add another triangle of pastry the same size on top.
From here, cut slits up the tree and twist them. Use the photos as a visual guide to help!
Finally, brush the tree with egg, top with parmesan and bake until golden brown and delicious.
It would be nice to have this pull-apart ready just as your Christmas party guests arrive. They can snack on pastry and enjoy cocktails before dinner. You can’t go wrong with some cheesy, flaky pastry. For even more flavour, serve a marinara dipping sauce on the side.
Honestly, nothing is more delicious. I can’t wait to serve this to my family on Christmas Eve!

minutesA quick and delicious Christmas pastry appetiser.
Ingredients
3 puff pastry sheets, thawed
2 tsp basil pesto
1 egg
1/2 cup parmesan, grated
marinara sauce for dipping
Directions
- Line an oven tray with baking paper and preheat the oven to 190°C.
- Lay out your pastry sheets and cut one in half, joining the two halves onto the other two sheets to make them longer. Cut the same size triangle into each side.
- Place one pastry triangle onto the lined tray and spread a generous layer of pesto across the whole thing. Lay the other pastry piece on top and cut the triangle into horizontal slices about 1 inch apart from the top to bottom, leaving the middle “trunk” of the tree intact. Gently twist the strips (see the above photo).
- Brush the top with egg and sprinkle over the parmesan. Bake for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown. Serve with marinara sauce.
